While Leamington hosts its first Ride of Silence and Bike Friendly Windsor Essex hosts its second Windsor Ride of Silence, Chatham will be holding their third annual Ride of Silence.

The Chatham event will take place at 6:00pm at the Union Gas Parking Lot (50 Keil Drive North).

The Ride of Silence will take place in hundreds of cities worldwide on Wednesday May 16th.

As with all locations for the Ride of Silence, the ride will be a slow, silent procession meant to honour those injured or killed while cycling, and to remind motorists of the need to share the road.

Last year’s moving Windsor Ride of Silence spawned a new Ride of Silence location for 2012. Eric Peters, whose son Kyle was struck and killed while cycling in Leamington in 2010 will be hosting the ride.

The Leamington Ride of Silence will meet at the Caldwell First Nation Community Hall (14 Orange Street) at 5:30pm for registration. The ride will begin at 7pm, and will be escorted by a hearse from Reid’s Funeral Home and the OPP.

In addition to their Wine Trail Rides, WindsorEats will again be hosting the Bikes & Beers Cycling Tour this year. The event, on May 26, will visit the new Walkerville Brewery as well as Motor Burger and Rino’s Kitchen, tasting beers from Steam Whistle and Wellington Brewery.

Proceeds from the event will go to Returns for Leukeuma. Tickets are available until May 22 here, and participants should provide their own 2-wheeled transportation – unless they want to rent a WindsorEats tandem.

2012 will mark the 10th year for the Ride of Silence, now held worldwide on the third Wednesday of May.

Chris Phelan, the founder of the Ride of Silence, states that “the history of that first gathering in Dallas, TX has become almost mythical”. It was conceived as a one-time event, inspired by the recent death of his friend, Larry Schwartz, however it has been held every year since. From the beginning, the event has been held in honour of everyone who has been injured or killed while cycling. The initial ride drew 1000 participants – cyclists on “mountain bikes, tri-bikes, tandems, and recumbents.” Word got out, and people started to contact Phelan, asking how to start a ride in their community. The ride was held in over 300 locations last year, including 28 in Canada.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees.

The 2012 Windsor ride will be held Wednesday May 16th at the Downtown Mission of Windsor (664 Victoria). Participant sign-in will start at 6pm, and the ride will start at 7pm.
