What are your views on cycling in Windsor?
Simply put, I find that cycling is a fun healthy way to commute, and spend time with family. I do however, have issue with both sides (cyclists and drivers who do not follow the rules of the road) I have been on both sides of the spectrum. As a driver I have had cyclists ride in the centre of the road, or swerve out suddenly. I have also had drivers hugging the curb knocking me off my bike a few times. The most recent incident happening while my daughter was in the child seat on the rear of my bicycle. I think we need to work together. Both side need to realize that and show each other some respect.
Do you own a bike? How often do you ride it?
Yes I do own a bicycle and I ride it a few times a week as my daughter loves to go for rides.
Recent research shows that 65% of Windsorites have ridden a bike in the last year. What do you think can be done to get more windsorites cycling more often?
Some employers could have incentive programs. I worked for an employer that had a cycling month, and anyone who rode into work by bicycle would have their name put on a ballot, and at the end of the month there would be a draw for Spits tickets. Perhaps if more employers got involved it would help. Perhaps the city could even team up with a local radio station to give out 2 spits tickets randomly to cyclists. These are just ideas off the top of my head of course.
4) What do you think needs to be done to make Windsor more bicycle friendly?
I believe it all starts with the leaders. If the leaders in the community show they are willing to take part, most people will follow suit. I found that when I rode my bike to work, my team would start to do the same. Holding events like bike safety days, and things like the lung association bike trek are great tools as well.
5)What are your views on enforcing cycling laws in Windsor?
I believe it is equally as important as any other laws of the road. I believe that if noticed the police have an obligation to ticket those people who do not follow the rules set out to keep us safe. Helmets though funny looking sometimes are intended to keep us safe and should be worn. Bikes are not meant to be ridden on sidewalks and hand signals should be used.
6) Are you willing to make a commitment to bike to at least 4 city council meetings per year, to lead by example?
I would be willing to commit to a dozen minimum per year if elected. I am a strong believer in leading by example.
